Adult orthodontics is more popular than ever. Never before have there been so many ways for adults to have their teeth straightened, meaning there are options to correct all sorts of dental imperfections. If 2023 is the year you have decided to find out more about getting braces, read on to learn more about the signs that you may benefit from adult orthodontics.
The signs that you might need braces as an adult are pretty much the same as for a child, or teenager. The only difference is that you may have been living with these imperfections for a much longer time, to the point where you have got used to them, so you may need to think a little harder to understand what the problem is.
The main signs that indicate you may benefit from adult braces are:
- Visibly crooked teeth
- Overcrowded teeth that appear as though there are too many for your mouth
- Regularly biting down on your tongue
- Top or bottom teeth not closing together properly when you bite down
- Difficulty brushing or flossing between your teeth due to teeth being misaligned
- Clicking noises coming from your jaw when you’re chewing
- Difficulty pronouncing certain sounds
If any of these sound familiar and you no longer want to put up with these dental issues it is time to find out more about adult orthodontics.
Of course, we will always recommend an initial consultation to chat through the most suitable options for you, but it doesn’t hurt to read up on the different types of braces available. Then you can come to your appointment with some questions prepared to ensure you get all the information you need to help you make a decision.
Here is a brief guide to the types of braces we offer to adults here at Dulwich Orthodontics:
Fixed metal braces - these are the traditional ‘train track’ style braces that are fixed to the front of your teeth with a wire running through and small elastic bands to keep it in place. You can choose different coloured bands, or even gold brackets as an alternative to the stainless steel look.
Ceramic braces - these are another fixed brace option but as the brackets are tooth coloured, they blend more naturally with your teeth to give a less noticeable appearance.
Invisible aligners - a popular and easy to use treatment, invisible aligners such as Invisalign, are used to treat minor orthodontic issues. Clear aligners are custom made for your mouth and changed every two weeks to gradually move your teeth into the desired position, all whilst allowing you to eat and drink normally as you simply remove the aligners at meal times and when brushing your teeth.
