It doesn’t matter what age you are, providing you have teeth in your gums, it’s never too late to straighten them and put a smile back on your face. Until relatively recently, braces had always been seen as something for children and teenagers, but this isn’t the case at all and ever-growing numbers of adults are making the decision to go for teeth straightening treatment.
In the past, when braces were mentioned, it was always the unsightly metal “train track” braces that sprung to mind, but this is ceasing to be the case. Perhaps the biggest reason for so many adults opting for straighter teeth is that there are several different discreet treatments available. Whereas it used to be obvious if someone had braces as soon as they showed their teeth, adults can now choose from a number of treatments where braces are practically invisible. As a result, people are now much more confident about wearing braces and this self-esteem only grows once treatment is complete.
At Dulwich Orthodontics, alongside traditional fixed braces such as metal braces, ceramic braces, gold braces and self-ligating braces, we provide two different forms of invisible braces:
Clear aligners
Invisible clear aligners are probably our most popular treatment and it’s easy to understand why. Made from wafer-thin, medical grade plastic, they fit on to your teeth like a mouthguard and are almost invisible, making them ideal for people who are in the public eye or are self-conscious about their braces showing.
Clear aligners are proven to be a great treatment for straightening crooked, overlapping or gappy teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for around two weeks before changing to the next positioner, gradually moving the teeth into place. A further benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners can be removed at meal times and when cleaning your teeth, making it much easier to maintain excellent oral hygiene!
For minor orthodontic problems, we can provide Invisalign i7 and Invisalign Lite treatment.
Lingual braces
Lingual braces are probably the most discreet method of teeth straightening. Like traditional braces, they are fixed, however, the braces are fastened to the back of the teeth rather than the front, meaning that they are visible only to your orthodontist or dentist. Whilst lingual braces may not initially sound as appealing as removable clear aligners, they are the latest advancement in modern orthodontic treatment.
Lingual appliances are capable of treating a wide variety of problems. As not all patients are suitable for Invisalign, lingual braces can provide the ideal alternative. In fact, for more complex movements, lingual braces can be more effective than aligners.
