Types of Braces to Help with Misaligned Teeth

If you are unhappy with your smile, you may be considering teeth straightening treatment. Before making an enquiry with us, it may be helpful to read up on the different types of braces and the dental issues they can help fix, so that you know a little more about what to expect. In this blog we provide an overview of the braces treatments we offer here at Dulwich Orthodontics and how they can help improve your smile.

Fixed Metal Braces

The world’s most popular teeth straightening solution, fixed braces are commonly used by orthodontists to fix a wide range of issues. As the name suggests, fixed metal braces are fixed to the front of the teeth through a series of metal brackets, connected by a wire that is held in place by elastic bands.

Treatment time: Typically around 1 to 2 years, depending on the severity of the issue.

Used for: overbite, underbite, crooked teeth, poor jaw alignment and abnormal eruption of teeth.

Benefits:

  • Most cost effective brace type
  • Strong and durable
  • Customisation available in the form of different coloured bands

Drawbacks:

  • Brace cannot be removed
  • You’ll need regular appointments for tightening wires
  • Noticeable teeth straightening solution

Ceramic Braces

Also known as clear braces, this type of teeth straightening treatment also involves the use of a fixed brace. Instead of noticeable metal brackets, ceramic braces use tooth coloured brackets and bands, for a more discreet appearance.

Treatment time: Typically 18 months to 3 years, depending on the complexity of your case.

Used for: issues with bite such as overbite or underbite, crooked teeth and abnormal eruption of teeth.

Benefits:

  • Cost effective teeth straightening solution
  • More comfortable to wear than traditional metal braces
  • Less noticeable than fixed metal braces

Drawbacks:

  • Braces are more brittle and may be susceptible to damage
  • You may need to avoid certain foods to stop staining on your teeth

Invisible Braces

Of all the different types of braces invisible braces such as Invisalign, are the most sought after, due to their discreet nature and ease of use. They are, however, not suitable for people with complex dental problems. Invisible braces use clear, transparent aligners which fit over the teeth and are changed every two weeks to gradually move the teeth into the new position.

Treatment time: Generally 6 months to two years, depending on the complexity of your case.

Used for: crooked, gappy or overlapping teeth.

Benefits:

  • Virtually invisible teeth straightening solution
  • You can remove aligners to eat, drink and brush your teeth
  • No pain, irritation or cuts
  • Faster treatment time than traditional braces

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for people with complex dental issues
  • More expensive than traditional braces
  • Only effective if worn as instructed
